1. What are the advantages of using CoEm-Tek Coatings?

  • Energy savings
  • Corrosion control
  • Protection against UV damage
  • Waterproofing
  • Virtual elimination of thermal shock
  • Environmentally safe product
  • Water based result in easy application and clean up
  • Cost effective interior\exterior insulation and finish
  • Sound dampening qualities

2. How does CoEm-Tek coatings compare with “traditional” insulation?

Traditional insulation is meant to be mass insulation for protection against heat transferred by conduction (see explanation of Heat Transfer Mechanisms). CoEm-Tek coatings on the other hand prevents heat transfer by radiation. Traditional insulation and radiant barriers have value and one does not necessarily replace the other. In many cases radiation control coatings compliment traditional mass insulation.

Traditional insulation is typically installed on the underside of roofs, or inside the walls of buildings. As the outside temperature warms the roof or wall the heat is absorbed into the mass insulation. Once the mass insulation is saturated it re-radiates that heat back into the building. CoEm-Tek coatings keep 85% of the heat from solar radiation from ever getting into the roof because of its high solar reflectivity. The 15% that is absorbed by the coating is quickly dissipated through the ceramic particles by the products high rate of emissivity.

3. Why is it that CoEm-Tek coatings have such high solar reflectivity values?

CoEm-Tek coatings are formulated with not only Titanium Dioxide, but with a mixture of “trade secret” pigments, which actually enhance the reflective values.

4. What is the R-value of your ceramic products, and how do these values compare with mass insulation?

There are no R-Values yet for liquid coatings, but they can produce an insulation equivalent of up to R-12, and when used on exterior roofs and walls, using our standard white color we can achieve equivalent R-values of up to R-20 because of the high reflective values of the coatings.

5. Can you prove that your products will actually reduce my energy costs and save me money?

Yes, we have software that we use to perform energy calculations to show the energy savings and potential payback of the cost to install the products. For large installations, we can have an engineering company perform an energy audit on the building showing energy savings and paybacks.

6. If CoEm-Tek’s coatings keeps the heat out during the summer, will it keep the heat in during the winter?

CoEm-Tek’s ceramic coatings are much more effective at keeping the heat out in the summer, but will, to a lesser degree, keep the heat in during the winter. The same principles apply, the coating acts as a radiant barrier keeping heat from being absorbed by the walls and ceiling, but the results are less noticeable then when trying to keep heat out.

7. What surfaces need special preparation?

All surfaces must be clean and dry. Rust must be treated. See product data sheets for additional information.

8. What is the impact of color on the reflectivity on CoEm-Tek’s ceramic coatings?

CoEm-Tek’s standard bright white color is the most efficient, when colour is added the reflectivity will decrease slightly.

9. Will CoEm-Tek’s ceramic coatings provide additional insulation value if the dry film thickness is increased?

Yes, but will be cost effective with 2 or 3 coats, the added insulation value will be cost prohibitive after 25 to 30 mils of dry film thickness is reached.

10. What is the average shelf life for CoEm-Tek coatings?

The maximum shelf life is typically one year. We have found many of our products to be stable, if not opened, for up to three years. CoEm-Tek Coatings uses one of the highest quality of in-can-perservatives available on the market.

11. What is the temperature range of service for CoEm-Tek coatings?

CoEm-Tek coatings will perform at most any temperature, but we find that the products perform the best at temperatures above 26ºC (80ºF) but not to exceed 177ºC (350ºF).

12. What kind of training or certification does CoEm-Tek provide?

We offer a one-day course covering the theory and application of the product for those companies interested in being a Certified CoEm-Tek Applicator. The training can be provided here in Heidelberg, Ontario or at your location.

13. What kind of warranty is offered on your products?

When the products are applied according to our specifications we will provide a 10 Year Limited Warranty on the product. With the coatings durability and resistance to UV light it should last much longer then the 10 years though.
